Mac OS 7.0 to Mac OS 7.6.1
Summary
of this Page
Mac
OS 7 was Apple's attempt to support the new world of color,
multiple applications, and the prospect of wide-area computer
to computer communication. While all of these had been around
on OS 6 in some form or another, OS 7 really unified all the
features. With the "official" advent of the internet
in via the then startup Netscape (Goodell, Jeff. "The Rise
and Fall of Apple Inc." Rolling Stone issues 731, 732),
there was a stampede to support world wide web. Apple updated
it's feature set from OS 7.0 to OS 7.6.1, keeping support for
PPP (point-to-point protocol) and SLIP (single-line interface
protocol) and adding new support for internet protocols like
TCP/IP via Open Transport. In the end, PPP and TCP/IP proved
to be more dominant (and flexible) and symbiotically were the
Macintosh's internet connection tools. As this is the case,
the following directions are how to configure you OS 7 machine
using PPP and MacTCP. There is directions on how to use the
automatic helper application Apple Internet Dialer as
well as directions on how to manually configure you computer.
At the end of the document, we have a list of supported web
browsers and email clients.
